If you decide to embark on a different treatment for your depression, especially Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), experience and outcomes matter. If you were choosing a surgeon for a new but highly effective procedure, would you prefer someone who has completed 20-80 cases—or someone who has performed the same treatment for 14 years, across 2 different TMS machines, with more than 400 patients treated?
That is the difference experience makes.
Why TMS of Knoxville
TMS of Knoxville opened the first TMS treatment center in East Tennessee in 2013. Since then:
We have treated over 400 patients with major depressive disorder.
Our remission rate is 56.7%, consistent with or exceeding national benchmarks.
70% of patients who reach remission maintain it long-term without needing additional treatment.
Among patients who later returned for retreatment, fewer than 5 did not reach remission again.
We have delivered over 400 individual TMS sessions. Our practice is physician-led, continuity-focused, and built on long-term clinical relationships. Many patients return to us years later because they trust the care, the consistency, and the outcomes.
About the New Corporate TMS Providers in Knoxville
Several new multi-state corporations that provide outpatient psychiatric practices now in Knoxville, most in the last 5 years. One clinic in Knoxville claims that they have delivered 135,000 TMS treatments nationwide. While this sounds impressive, context matters:
•They operate 36 locations across the U.S.
•Using the standard 36-session FDA protocol, this equates to a maximum of 3,750 patients treated nationwide.
•Accounting for retreatments (a conservative 20% estimate), the number of unique patients is closer to 3,000, or roughly 83 patients per location—and likely fewer, depending on how long each clinic has been open. This clinic only recently as of the summer of 2026 hired a psychiatrist to treat TMS patients.
Another clinic stated that their two psychiatrists, have 30+ years of combined psychiatric experience and report having treated over 600 TMS patients.
•Since TMS was only FDA-cleared in the U.S. in 2008, the “30+ years” figure clearly refers to general psychiatric experience, not years of providing TMS treatment.
•They reported 600 patients treated appears high for a relatively young Knoxville clinic and may reflect the combined total across all Neurocare locations or across their three Tennessee clinics. Their website does not clarify this, making it difficult to determine the exact local treatment volume.
•This company has been operating in West Knoxville for approximately 5 years and is part of a national network with 10 locations.
•They do not publicly report remission rates or total treatments. In fact none of the corporate clinics do.
Why does this matter and how is TMS of Knoxville different?
TMS is highly effective, but outcomes depend on:
•Accurate diagnosis
•Proper motor thresholding
•Consistent coil placement
•Protocol selection
•Clinical judgment during the course of treatment
•Experience with retreatment and complex cases
These are areas where experience directly influences remission rates.
At TMS of Knoxville, every patient is evaluated with a FREE CONSULT and followed by a psychiatrist with more than a decade of TMS-specific experience. We have treated the full spectrum of depression severity, including patients who have failed multiple medications, ECT, ketamine/esketamine, and prior TMS elsewhere. Due to the fact that a portion of patients are late-responders, we offer 10 extra sessions beyond the approved 36 sessions in cases of late improvement AT NO COST TO THE PATIENT and we believe we are the only TMS clinic in Knoxville offering this.
Our Commitment
We remain committed to:
•Transparent reporting of outcomes. As of September 8, 2026, our remission rate is 56.7% and our response rate (a 50% reduction in depression scale ratings) is 77.5%.
•Evidence-based protocols
•Personalized care
•Long-term follow-up
•Collaboration with referring clinicians – we make every effort to send a copy of the consult to the referring provider as well as any medication recommendations to the prescriber based upon Dr. Cook’s long experience with providing good medication practices.
